Thoroughly Modern Millie is a 2002 musical featuring the music of Jeanine Tesori, the lyrics of Dick Scanlan, and a book by Richard Morris and Scanlan. It is based on the 1967 motion picture of the same title, which starred Julie Andrews.

Set in the Roaring Twenties, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of a naïve small-town girl named Millie Dillmount, who embarks on an adventure to New York City in order to find work as a secretary for an eligible bachelor. It was, after all, the 1920s, and the flapper lifestyle was in vogue among sophisticated modern women.

She initially enjoys life in the big city, but trouble ensues when the owner of the place she is living in plots to kidnap her best friend to sell her into slavery in China. What’s more, her attempts to seduce her boss don’t seem to be working, and Jimmy, the handsome man she actually ends up falling in love with, is totally broke—or so she thinks.

Thoroughly Modern Millie is a rollicking musical that is at the same time heartwarming. It won a total of six Tony Awards in 2002, including Best Musical.
