Originally staged in Broadway in 1947, Brigadoon is a musical written by Alan Jay Lerner. It features the music of Frederick Loewe and lyrics of Lerner. In 1954, MGM released a musical feature film adaptation of the musical, a motion picture which starred Gene Kelly, Van Johnson, and Cyd Charisse.
The musical follows New Yorkers Tommy Albright and Jeff Douglas, who go on a hunting trip to Scotland. During their wanderings, they discover a quaint little hamlet known as Brigadoon. The two marvel at the fact that the village can’t be found on any of the maps they have. It doesn’t take long for them to find out why and they learn that it’s because Brigadoon is a magical place.
200 years ago, a local minister prayed to God to protect their village from being changed by the outside world. God heard and granted the prayer, and so it happened that the village now only appears for one day every 100 years. No resident can leave the town or else it will disappear forever. However, any outsider can stay in Brigadoon, but only if that person loves someone in the village enough to leave everything behind. When Tommy falls in love with a local girl named Fiona, he realizes that they can’t have a life outside of Brigadoon, but they might just have a life in the enchanted village.
