The Sound of Music is led by Maria, a nun-in-training who has taken leave from the abbey to become the governess of the von Trapp family. During her stay, she earns the love and respect of the seven naughty children and their strict, militaristic father. Set in Austria just before World War II breaks out, the new family finds their music keeping them together in the most trying of times.
The musical, which featured lyrics and music by Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, was based on Maria von Trapp’s memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers. The original Broadway production in 1959 won 5 of its 9 Tony Award nominations. In 1965, The Sound of Music was adapted into an Academy Award-winning film of the same name starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer.
