Projecting your Backdrop

Here are some helpful and commonly used terms to help you familiarize yourself when projecting your backdrops.

Lumens

Strictly defined a lumen is the amount of light that falls on an area of one square foot from one candle that is one foot away. When it comes to projection, however, “lumens” is a measure of how much lighting a projector puts out. The the higher the lumens the brighter the projected image will be.

Throw

Throw is the distance between a projector lens and its screen. It is the distance the image is thrown onto the screen, and it has a large effect on screen size. Some theater installations may often have an incorrect throw distance in the room but this can be corrected by use of a short throw lens. There are also “long throw” lenses available.

A related measurement, throw ratio, is the ratio of the distance from the lens to the screen (throw) to the screen width. A larger throw ratio corresponds to a more tightly focused optical system.

Throw Ratio = D / W

Front Projection

Is when you are projecting the image from the same side it it is viewed.

Short Throw Projection

Allow users to create big pictures in tight spaces, without concerns about shadows obstructing the image or light shining in the presenter’s face. These projectors have very short throw ratios, the distance from projector to screen compared to the screen size.

Using the Demo Slides from Grosh Digital

Grosh Digital is offering animated and still images to rent as projected scenery. Take a tour of how to project your backdrops for dozens of shows including The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Peter Pan and more.

If you’re new to Projection, consider creating an account on www.groshdigital.com so that you can Test Before your Rent. We offer 4 DEMO slides for all new accounts.

1. Register for your account by clicking on the LOGIN on the top right corner of the Grosh Digital Website.

2. Download and Login to the Grosh Digital Media Player on your computer that is connected to the projector.

3. Click on the Orders (cart image) at the bottom. You will see

4. When you click on the EDIT button, you’ll be taken to the EDITOR section of the media player. Here you can:

Reorder your slide sequence
Hide Slides
Insert Blank Slides (great for set changes or intermission)
Copy Slides to use multiple times throughout your performance
Change the slide transition
Preview your show (this will be with watermarked images until you Activate your order)

5. Click on the PREVIEW IMAGES button at the top or bottom of the EDITOR page. You will then be shown the images with a Watermark overlaid. Simply hig the right arrow button on your keyboard to advance to the next image. (NOTE: You can enter into Full Screen mode on the top left corner to hide the menu bar.)

6. Please note that since these are only DEMO slides, the Activate and Play feature will not function. When you have placed an order with Grosh Digital, your order will appear in the Orders section. You will no longer see the Demo slides. When you are ready to Activate your show, click on the Activate button and the rental duration for which you ordered your images for will begin to countdown. Only the Activate button will remove the watermarks on your projected backdrops.

Tips for Lighting a Projected Scene

Many customers who have come across the Grosh Digital site have asked various questions about how it works. One of the most commonly asked questions we’ve received is “how do I light a projected backdrop?”.

When using projected scenery, it is important to take into consideration the light in the space. The right amount of light can make or break your images and ultimately your show. Projection has come a long way over the years and projectors are becoming brighter and images and animations are looking better than ever before. An image that may have required two to four projectors to produce in the past can now be done with a single projector. The output of light is typically referred to in lumens: the higher the lumens, the more light output the fixture or projector will output. Projection technology is getting brighter and brighter every day. Projectors in very large-scale applications can reach up to 100,000 lumens. In these situations, a large number of lumens is typically needed because the of the distance from the projector to the surface very far. Another reason more lumens could be needed is the lighting that is being used.

Choosing the proper blend of lighting and projection in a space can be key to making your digital image looking the best it can be. You would not want to put a light directly on the screen you are projecting onto. This would cause your projected image to be washed out and not show up at all. Some spaces when projection is being used have very large windows or natural light coming in. It is very important to keep these elements of light when utilizing projection. The projectors used in these situations typically have a higher lumen count to compensate for the added light in the room. Projection and lighting in a production should go hand in hand and one should not be overtaken by one or the other. The key is getting the subject or actors lit properly with the right amount of lighting while not using so much light that the projection is blown out and colors are washed out and not visible. The proper blend is key. This will have your production with digital projection looking its best at all times!

Grosh Goes Digital - Scenic Projections at Grosh Digital

Introducing Grosh Digital!

The quality of Grosh backdrops goes Digital! You are now able to project hundreds of backdrops either as the still images of beautiful backdrops that you’ve come to know Grosh for, or our new Animated images for projection. Our team of artists have worked diligently to create full 3D designs from showing snow fall in a night forest landscape to fireplace roaring in a Tavern interior to a Pirate Ship Deck swaying on the ocean. Begin browsing for your scenes on the Grosh Digital website where you can use keywords to search for popular shows, themes or even complete show packages. The show packages include at least 6 backdrops for the most well known Broadway productions including Wizard of Oz, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and more.

Once you have placed your order online you simply download the Grosh Digital Desktop application and login with the same email and password as you used when creating your account. After you have logged into your account, you will see the New Order you placed or a Demo order if no order was created on the Grosh Digital website. View the order by clicking on it and continue to EDIT to change the order sequence of your backdrop images, copy images, insert blank slides or change the transition of the slide. Preview the order and connect this directly to your desktop computer that is outputting to your projector.

Once you are ready to begin your show, ACTIVATE your order which will start the rental duration time that the order was rented for. Upon activation, the watermarks on all images will be removed and you can begin your show!
